C Ỏ D Ạ I

“Wild grass child of sun and rain
How to be rid of you, indestructible !
In the season of flood waters
We think the grass is drowned,
But when the days come for waters to retreat
Grass, wild grass is the first to spring again.”
What lyric rhythms fill my thoughts
When my way lies through prairie lands
No habitation there, no shade of trees, to find the way
Make your own path, go forward.
The partisan leaning on his gun listens,
It is a song about a garden full of fruit
But suddenly he’s dreaming of the prairie of wild grass
And sick for home his thoughts turn to his village
There, there is shattering and blaze of bombs
By phosphorus and fire laid waste and all destroyed.
Nothing is left but fire and twisted iron
And earth …but that is all
A savage anger at his heart, gun on his shoulder
He goes back with his comrades, back to his old village
And what he sees there first is grass,
Alone, life is one trace in his erstwhile home
He is gone to search for people of his village
They come round him circling full of questions
And when all is said, there’s one thing poignant and clear:
From the earth … our earth is the grass there growing yet ?
Life in its simplest many a thousand year
Its close companion always was the rice
In the blaze of midsummer noons, one dreams of green orchards cool
Faraway from home, some dream of mountain clouds,
Of a river, a hill, a forest, some see a plume of smoke
Or scent home in the wind.
There are few whose dreams are of a blade of grass
Growing by chance beside some well known path
So much too insignificant, unrecognized, forgotten
It features in no dreams … but it survives.
