Sách xếp ngăn tường, trạn cất ga men.
Mấy thước lụa xưa, dành che giường ngủ.
Bàn viết có ảnh con nho nhỏ
Cười trong trai ngọc Cô Tô
Mảnh ngói Loa Thành, chặn những trang thơ.
Con ốc Sầm Sơn còn vang sóng bể
Bát cắm hoa xanh men triều đại Lý.
Vẫn in vàng tươi sáng giữa tim ta.

Morning we wake, draw the curtain back,
Sun of Autumn golden in the room
Sprinkling the orchids in their basket, velvet petals, rosy light.
Hear the radio, sounds of human life.
Today how many air raid warnings will we have ?
And our dear, loved room
Will it still be standing at the end of this day ?
Our room stands ready, ranked
With other rooms, upright and side by side
By a green line of trees where birds sing and play.
With echo of far firing and of bombs the windows shake.
I love our room as I love Hanoi
As I love our daily life, though sometimes hard.
The hearth is kitchen when we have extra things to cook.
Books stand on the shelf against the wall, there the food box , there the tin.
A few yards of faded silk curtain the bed,
On the table is a picture of our child
In a pearl oyster once brought home from Co Tu (1)
A piece of tile from the citadel Co Loa (2) holds down some sheets of verse ,
A shell from Sam Son (3) keeps in its whorls echoes of the waves of sea;
Flowers in an old blue enameled jug.
The little chairs make bamboo shadows like the mountain groves …
These things all gathered in ten years of settled life,
Since we came in from the jungle ten years back.
With its two windows our room is wide,
Where clouds sail by and the wind from the Red River.
Here summer sunsets pass to dark, moonlight gathers in,
Then we remember poignantly the Southern shores …
Our room … embraced inits four walls
It has heard our laughter and the singing of our child.
The winter blast may blow along the street,
You and I, my dearest sit close in the good steam of rice,
Oh our dear room!
This morning again as always
Another sky … blue today, yellow melon flowers climb outside.
How it is full of the memory of our child voice, the laughing eyes !
It keeps forever the thoughts of friends departed for the firing lines.
Sudden sounds the siren … shock to the heart …
Our room closes shutters to hold tight its life..
The windows are waiting
The windows are alert and taut with anger.
Even if hostile bombs fall in our street,
Well I know that our room,
As other rooms in every street,
Though they may fall and crumble, they will never die.
Like our whole city, now in Autumn when flower chrysanthemums
A golden light will always shine, lighting our inmost hearts.
