Hồn phách tuy về cõi quỉ, thi hài vẫn còn ở nhân gian, tóc lông răng móng chưa kịp tiêu, đàm dãi máu me đều chảy trước.
PUBLIC DISSERTATION ON THE APPARENT BODY
Tran Thai Tong
For all men, the body is the source of suffering, its substance
Is at the origin of Karmar (1).To consider the body real is to ally
oneself with he who recognizes a thief as his own son.
Let us examine the question carefully, where is this apparent body, before its materialzation by the foetus ? The appearance of desires engenders the correlations. The five means of knowledge (2) together, give birth to the body and to the form, both as false as they are ephemeral.
One forgets the true and the fundamental. One was real the lie and the false. Thus, boys or girls, beautiful or ugly, throw themselves frantically around, giving free rein to their desires. None thinks to retrace his steps to return to his true
being. With eyes riveted on the perception of the exterior world, none thinks to turn his head and look within himself. Subject from bìrth to the law of continual change everywhere and always each does nothing but speaks of dreams, all the while dreaming. Flinging himself about in agitation, each takes false for true, turns back on the doctrine of Nothingness and searches for Appearance
One adorns this cranium smooth as a ladle. with flowers and jade; one perfumes thịs bag of fetid skin — the body — with musk and sandalwood. One tailors flowered silk to envelop this sack of pus and blood:; one powders and paints this tub of fecal material. All these exterior adornments hide a foundation of filth. Incapable of being ashamed of this unhealthy body, worse even, one dedicates veritable cult to it.
The great majority of mẹn are as marionettes, manipulated by strings. Put into action, they seem alive; left to themselves, they are a veritable death. The ruses and strategics have their source in the Six Thieves (4). One does not bother oneself with the near arrival of old age, sickness, death. One gives oneself up to the passion of alcohol, lust and money. For niggardly advantages smaller than the head of a fly or the horn of a snail, one resigns oneself to being put in the fetters of profit:and enchained by the reins of honours. The day goes by in the pursuit of vain pleasures, the night -tormented by nightmares. Evil actions accumulate like layers of mud at the bottom of a well, without one's becoming aware that one’s hair has turned white as hoar-frost.
One fine morning the sickness contracted exasperates and the life of a hundred, years is reduced to a huge dream. Your entrails torture you like implacable enemies, your body evokes that of a devil who died of hunger. Nevertheless, one tries again to make sacrifices in the hope of praying to the spirits and changing one’s destiny, but one is ignorant of the fact that such an action brings about the death of animals and endangers life.
Aspiring to an existence as long as the century old pines, one forgets that one’s body is no more than a dilapidated house.
The vital spirits give themselves already up to hell, but the cadaver remains in the human world. The hair on the head and the hair on the body, like the nails and the teeth have not the time to discompose when already the secretions and mucous appear. The putrefaction begins with the pus ; miasmas infect sky and earth. How horrible they are to see those blackened swellings, those blue marks ! Iƒ the cadaver is kept in the house, worms appear with decomposition. If it is thrown out on the road, it becomes the prey of vultures and dogs. The passer-by must hold his nose to continue his path. The pious son throws a basket of dirt to cover the corpse. The bones, once gathered and buried, the coffin is confined to the guard of a solitary glow-worm ; the tomb is abandoned in deserted mountains ten thousand leagues away.
The rosy lace crowned with the blue hair of old becomes green cinder mixed with white bones.
The rain of tears waters the earth, beneath dismal clouds. The wind of pain passes. the lunar brightness becomes less. The night advances troubled by the tears and lament of demons and the piteous moans of spirits. With the years, the mounds are destroyed and trampled by buffaloes and horses.. The glow-worms throw their funereal gleam into the green grasses. Thẹ crickets emit intermittent groans under the branches of cemetery poplars. The commemorative steles half-covered with moss and lichen give way to paths formed under the tread of herdsmen and woodcutters. Little does it matter if, alive, they were eminent men of letters of beauties capable of winning citadels, all must follow the same path. There is no
exception. In the end, all have the same destiny.
Seduced by beauty, the eye leads man towards a forest of swords. Bewitched by the sound of music, the ears lead him to the mountain of lances. The nose ¡s invaded by fetid stinking odours; the tongue tastes balls of incandescent fire. Melting copper pours over the body trembling with horror; the burning fire of boilers revives atrocious sufferings. One day in hell is as long as one hundred years of terrestrial life.
If we consider all that with open eyes then we must quickly turn away and remake our life . Let us make a leap to escape from the prison of birth and death. Let us, with a powerful hand tear away the webs of love and desire. Man or woman , each can perfect himself by the practice of virtue. Intelligent less endowed , each has his part.
Before beings able to attain the wisdom of Buddha or grasp the ideas of the Masters, it is first necessary to obey the prohibitions and to give oneself up to prayer. Let each persevere in this path until the day when he realizes that Buddha and the Masters also participate in Nothingness and that he will no longer have need of prohibitions or prayers. He will then discover that the false colours that surround us are equally real colours and that our profane body is equally the body of the Supreme Law. The Six Thieves (4), once defeated , become six strong guardian angels . The Eight Sufferings (5), once mastered , change into eight satisfactions.
