.

Lá đào rơi rắc lối Thiên Thai,
Suối tiễn, oanh đưa, những ngậm ngùi!
   Nửa năm tiên cảnh,
   Một bước trần ai,
Ước cũ duyên thừa có thế thôi.
   Đá mòn, rêu nhạt,
   Nước chảy, huê trôi,
Cái hạc bay lên vút tận trời!
Trời đất từ đây xa cách mãi.
   Cửa động,
   Đầu non,
   Đường lối cũ,
Ngàn năm thơ thẩn bóng trăng chơi...

In the far mountain ways (1)

The leaves of the peach tree

And the bubbling spring waters

Accompany the lovers at the moment of parting.

With a song the oriole follows

Singing to the last adieu;

The air is full of the music of regret.

The year gone in the land of enchantment

It is but one step to the land of dust,

And of the old vows of the love here is all that remains.

Stone weathers and old moss pales

The water flows without return

Carrying flowers in its running stream.

Slowly the crane (2) takes flight, dragging its wings across the sky

Heaven and earth forever will be twain and separate.

The portal of the carven,

The summit of the mountain

And ancient pathways are forever lost

Under the light of the wandering moon.

(1)  According to legend, under the Chinese dynasty of the Eastern Hans, around the years of 60-70 of our era, Luu Than &  Nguyen Trieu, who were gathering medicinal herbs, lost their way and came to the Grotto of Thien Thai. They saw a spring where peach trees grew loaded with ripe peaches, symbol of longevity. Two fairies awaited them there to love them  and celebrate their union. At the end of six months, languishing with nostalgia, the two men insisted on returning to the world of mortals. In spite of  the supplications of their wives. When they arrived back in their native village they saw that hundreds of years had elapsed since their departure. Soon after, they searched in vain for the road to Thien Thai.

(2)  The crane was a secret bird, the steed of  the immortals.
