 TRÊN ĐƯỜNG VỀ

                               Chế Lan Viên

Một ngày biếc thị thành ta rời bỏ
Quay về xem non nước giống dân Hời
..................................
..................................

Những tượng Chàm lở lói rỉ rên than

ON THE RETURNING

                           Che Lan Vien

It was on a blue bright day I left the town

Home bound, for hills and waters of the Cham

Now here are the towers of expectation.

The fallen temples and the works of time

Deserted rivers drag their waters through the shades

Ancient statues of the Cham, broken by centuries,

Here stand lamenting, weeping from their wounds

Here are deep forests where the tree-tops lean

And thousands upon thousands the Cham phantoms come

Blindly advancing, hands holding hands

In the everlasting  forests the tenuous light of dusk

Fills with sweet smell, vibrant with the grieving song of birds

Here the field where the two warring armies clashed

The souls of many who fell here for their land

Cry to the lonely echo

The blood of the men of  Cham, night and day, still storms with bitter rage.

The bones of the Cham relentlessly cry for vengeance.

I must see the scenes of peace in the land of Champa.

The lonely villages in the clear sunset light.

And gently the young girls coming home

The folds of their brown skirts, rose shaded,

How they sing in the wind !

See too the palaces splendidly lit in sun blaze,

Marvelous temples under blue heights of heaven

And the old men- of-war now dreaming on the flood at peace,

The pensive amble of the sacred elephants below ancient walls.

See perhaps in a shimmering vision of jade- light, mocking insubstantial.

The King mandarin of Cham, drunk with delight

In the ivory flesh of Cham girls, dreaming

To melodious rhythms of a flute

While to its music bend and sway their flowerlike forms.

All this comes to me on the road returning

Haunted without respite by nights and days engulfed in time

And always from my heart well up

Tears and a tender longing for the people of Champa.
